El Niño Storm Preparedness

El Niño is a natural weather pattern occurring every few years, causing warmer waters in the Pacific Ocean. For Southern California, these changes may bring periods of increased rainfall, flooding, and other severe weather conditions. Stay prepared to protect your family, home, and property.

Ways to Prepare:

  • Create an Emergency Plan – Pack multi-day supplies and identify evacuation routes. Plan how your household will stay connected.
  • Prepare Your Home – Clear out gutters, downspouts, and storm drains to ensure smooth water flow.
  • Spot the Drop! - Check for leaks, especially in your roof or other areas that could be affected by rain
  • Reduce Irrigation Schedules – Turn off sprinklers before big rain events and for at least 24 hours after to prevent overwatering
  • Limit Storm Hazards – Trim trees and secure plants or outdoor furniture to avoid potential dangers
